The faith of Islam arived in the Region around 1000 years ago. Most West Africans were converted to the new religion and Islamic standards now previal. This means that, although it is unlikely that anyone would comment, going into a town, house, school, market, museum or other non-tourist area in your beach outfit would not meet with approval. Just take a moment to think about what to wear and what to carry in a bag before you venture out in the mornings and you won't upset anyone.

There are other religions in The Gambia and nearby countries such as Christianity and Animism (the ancient African spiritualism). You will find that the locals will celebrate any festival whether it belongs to their denomination or not - so there are a lot of parties!

Ramadan is of course very important and Tobaski (the local name for Eed) is probably the most celebrated festival.
