Culture > Tribes

The Mandinka tribe is the most populous in the Gambia, followed by the Wollof. The proportion of Mandinka increases as you get further from the coast to the rural settlements around the river and conversly you will find more Wollof near the coastal areas. As a result, you will encounter many Wollof in the tourist areas.

The Wollofs are the majority tribe in neighbouring Senegal (where Mandinkas are the second most populous). You will find that Wollofs often have French as their main European language (though those who deal with tourists - many of the fruit sellers at the beach will be Wollof - will also speak English).

There are numerous other tribes, such as Jola, Fulla and Serrenkule - it can be fun to learn the tribal herritage of those you meet and most will be happy to talk to you about theirs.

As with any foreign country, it won't hurt at all to learn a few words - why not learn the p's and q's in Mandinka and Wollof?
